Color-Coded Mops Shopping Guide
Written by Adam Serfas
Different messes and cleaning protocols require different mops, and here at RSQP, we consider ourselves a one-stop mop shop for food processors and manufacturers, pharmaceutical manufacturers, grocers, brewers, restauranteurs, and more. In this blog post, we’ll break down all of the different color-coded mops we carry so that you can find the right one for your needs.
Shopping For Dust Mops
Shopping for dust mops is the most straightforward, as product selection is much more streamlined compared to wet mops. You’re going to pick a dust mop head frame, a handle type, and a dust mop head.
Our dust mop heads come in three different widths: 24 inches, 36 inches, and 48 inches. Each of these comes in 6 full-color options—green, blue, red, white, yellow, and orange—to suit color-coding plans. For those with color-coding plans that extend beyond this standard set of colors, it is recommended to pair a white mop head with a handle that corresponds to the color that’s needed. Once you have your dust mop selected, you’ll need to choose a frame that matches the size of your mop head.
Finally, you’ll choose either a fiberglass or stainless steel handle. Fiberglass is the more economical option, and with the entire rod being color-coded, it is more obvious when a mop is not being used in the correct area. It’s also lightweight, making it the more ergonomic option. Fiberglass handles are more prone to breaking down over time, and can sustain scrapes that have the potential of leaving behind small debris. Stainless steel handles, on the other hand, are extremely durable, and, with that, come at a higher price point and overall weight. Unlike fiberglass handles, just the grip will be color-coded, making them less obvious when out of place. Both stainless steel and fiberglass handles options come in quite a few color variations to complement a wide range of color-coding plans.
Shopping For Wet Mops
Compared to dust mops, shopping for wet mops requires making a few more decisions.
As with dust mops, when choosing handles for wet mops, you can choose between fiberglass and stainless steel. You’ll also need to choose between a jaws or quick release handle. The quick release mop handle—sometimes called the stirrup or gate handle—has a narrow clip with teeth that secure the mop head. This handle is compatible with narrow band mop heads, which generally have a width of 1 to 1 ¼ inches. Despite the "quick release" name, these handles take a bit longer to change than jaws-style handles, due to their side gate opening. The jaws handle is a sturdier, thicker mop handle designed to securely grip the mop head. It is specifically made for use with wide, 5-inch band mop heads. Featuring easy-to-open jaws lined with teeth for a firm hold, this handle is more durable and long-lasting than the quick release version, but it generally comes at a higher price point.
Both the narrow and wide mop heads come in six colors: green, blue, red, white, yellow, and orange. Once again, for color-coding plans that use colors outside of these six, it is recommended to use a white mophead with a handle that matches the necessary color. We also carry an acme thread connection looped-end mop head that could be paired with any standard thread handle.
Once you have your wet mops selected, you can choose from several mop bucket options which vary by size and come in several colors to suit your color-coding plan needs. We also recommend ordering a few wet floor signs to help prevent slips on wet floors.
